EFT – Emotional Freedom Techniques
What does EFT stand for?
Those three magical letters EFT have caused some confusion in the world of therapy of late.
The EFT that I frequently but not always use in my work, stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques and was created by Gary Craig in the early 1990’s. However, there is another EFT created by Sue Johnson and used by some therapists. Sue’s EFT stands for Emotionally Focussed Therapy.
What is EFT - (Emotional Freedom Techniques)?
EFT also known as ‘Tapping’ is a form of psychological acupressure – based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture – that uses gentle tapping with the fingertips on the face, hands and body to help clear psychological stress.
The EFT Practitioner and the client work together, sometimes using words and suggestions and or affirmations to help the client clear themselves of negative memories and emotions. Unlike traditional counselling, the client does not need to talk about painful memories or incidents, rather they talk about the associated feelings connected to memories.
Professor Liz Boath, PhD has written a book (January 2023) called ‘Making the Case for EFT and Energy Psychology where she lists published EFT Case Studies. I feel very blessed that I was trained by Gwyneth Moss Ilkley UK to be an Advanced EFT Practitioner. Gwyneth is one of only 29 EFT World Masters taught by Gary Craig in 2006.
Can EFT work on Zoom?
Yes EFT can and does work on Zoom (providing the client has a good internet connection) and many prefer the known comfort of their own home, and staying in their comfort zone. Working online also avoids child care arrangements and travel costs.
What are some cases that you have used EFT for in the last few years?
Relationship Breakdown. Anxiety. Shame and Guilt.
PTSD. Isolation and loneliness after a bereavement. Work stress. Fear of Public Speaking.
Sexual Abuse. Pain Relief. Resentment. Food Cravings. Distress. Sleep problems. Depression.
Do you ever combine using EFT with Couples Therapy and Life Coaching?
Absolutely YES. I believe that every client or every couple has their own individual story and journey of healing that they want/need to go on to get to a better, healthier and stronger place. Therefore, as individuals there cannot be a one cure for all. To this end, I will use any and sometimes all the tools in my toolbox to create a bespoke programme for my client. If someone has previously had a negative experience in therapy/healing, then obviously I won’t expect them to want to use the same modality – and that is absolutely fine.
In the words of Tony Robins (who has I believe borrowed them from Buddhist monk, author, and peace activist, Thich Nhat Hanh) – “In Life pain is inevitable – suffering is optional.”
